In Windows Vista, what is Windows Mobile Device Center?

With the release of Windows Vista, Microsoft has also released new software for synchronizing Windows Mobile devices with your desktop or laptop computer. By default, Windows Mobile Device Center is not installed on the computer until you connect a device and perform a Windows update. At that point the computer will download and install Windows Mobile Device Center.

In Windows Vista, what is Windows Mobile Device Center?

A secure web site uses encryption and authentication standards to protect the confidentiality of web transactions.

Currently, the most commonly used protocol for web security is SSL, or Secure Sockets Layer. In addition to providing security for HTTP (web hypertext) transactions, SSL works with other TCP/IP standards such as IMAP mail and LDAP directory access. For a security standard such as SSL to work, your browser and the web server must both be configured to use it.

When you connect to a web site using SSL, your browser asks the server to authenticate itself, or confirm its identity. The authentication process uses cryptography to verify that a trusted independent third party, or certificate authority, such as Thawte or VeriSign, has registered and identified the server. SSL can also authenticate connecting users or their computers.

In addition, SSL encrypts the data that you send, and incorporates a mechanism for detecting any alteration in transit, so that eavesdropping on or tampering with web traffic is almost impossible. This is essential for safely transmitting highly confidential information such as credit card numbers.

Practically all current browsers are set up by default to accept SSL certificates from most established certificate authorities, and to notify you when you are entering or leaving secure sites, including secure areas of comprehensive sites.

Why does my web page look different when I use different computers and web browsers?

Because HTML was designed for an environment common to different platforms (e.g., Windows, Mac OS, Mac OS X, the X Window System) and configurations unique to each user, a web page will not look the same on all computers. When designing your pages, keep in mind that users will have different browser window sizes set and may even configure their browsers to have different font, text, link, and background characteristics. If your page looks right only if the browser window is a certain width and uses a certain font, you should reconsider its layout.

If you are using style sheets (CSS), be aware that different browsers interpret style sheets very differently, particularly text size.

Remember that not all browsers are the same. There are tags that some browsers will read but that other browsers won't understand, e.g., Java, floating images, frames, or I-frames.

It is essential to look at your pages with several browsers, including text-based ones such as Lynx. Numerous HTML style guides are available that will help you optimize your page for both appearance and legibility across browsers.

In Windows Vista, how do I configure the firewall to allow pings?

Windows Vista includes Windows Firewall and enables that firewall by default. The graphical interface to the firewall settings does not include an option to respond to pings. To allow Vista to respond to pings without disabling the entire firewall, follow these steps:

1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, from the Start menu, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator.

2. Enter: netsh firewall set icmpsetting 8 enable
